LAST RITES HELD FOR OLE ERICKSON

Ole Erickson, 81, a resident of Hawarden many years, passed away at the Hawarden Nursing home at 8:20 last Friday night [Aug. 9]. Mr. Erickson broke his hip in a fall on the ice last February and for several months he was a patient at the Hawarden hospital, but the fracture did not heal properly. In June, he was taken to Sioux City and the bone in his hip was spiked. When he returned here, he was taken to the Hawarden Nursing home for care.

Funerral services were held at the Barnard Funeral home at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, with Rev. Noel Orcutt in charge. Miss Kathryn Gerdes sang two numbers. Interment was in Grace Hill cemetery.

Ole Erickson ws born at Madison, Wis., on November 18, 1864, and he grew to young manhood there. He was united in marriage with Helena Tragesser at Lodi, Wis. In 1891, they came to Hawarden to make their home. In 1903, his wife burned to death when she poured kerosene in the kitchen range. He was then left with the responsibility of rearing seven children, the eldest of whom was but 11 years.

Later, he went to Colorado, where he lived ten years. After he returned to this vicinity, he lived at McNally for a time, but a number of years ago he returned to Hawarden to make his home.

He is survived by six children: Andrew Erickson, McNally; Henry and Mike Erickson, Ireton; Mrs. Minnie Sweeney, Fort Rock, Ore., and Mrs. Anna Adams and Mrs. Louise Kruckenberg, Le Mars; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. His wife and two children preceded him in death.

From the Hawarden Independent, Feb. 14, 1946:

Ole Erickson Fractures Hip

Ole Erickson suffered a fractured hip last Thursday afternoon when he fell on an icy spot in the street in front of the W. E. Sedgwick home. Charles Sedgwick, Jr., discovered him in the street and assisted him to his home. He apparently seemed alright when Mr. Sedgwick left him, but when he attempted to get up during the night he fell on the floor and lay there until morning. C. D. Emmert noticed there was no smoke coming out of the chimney so he notified the C. H. Sedgwick family, who went to his assistance. He was removed to the Hawarden hospital Friday evening.
