Alton Democrat, January 8, 1898

The death of M. H. Hoxmeier which occurred last Monday morning while on a visit with relatives at Farmer, SD, was a great shock to his relatives and friends. Although he had been in ill health for the past few months, no one regarded his condition as imminently dangerous, and when he left home last Thursday, it was with the expectation of enjoying a few days change and visit, and when the message reached here Monday morning announcing his death, it seemed incredible.

Mr. Hoxmeier was born in St. Donatus, Jackson County, Iowa, was thirty-seven years of age at the time of his death. He was united in marriage with Miss Maggie Even, Oct. 27, 1888, at Gilbertsville, Iowa. Two children were born to bless their union, a little son, whose death occurred several years ago, and a little daughter, Annie, six years of age, who together with the sorrowing wife survive him.

They came to Alton to reside in 1889, and after living on a farm for one year, he entered into partnership with A. E. Goebel in the clothing business, which he has since continued. He was a good business man, a member of the Alton Fire Company and was a popular favorite among his friends, and his death has caused many an aching heart.

His remains arrived here Monday evening from Farmer, and the funeral was held from St. Mary’s church Thursday morning at 10 o’clock and was one of the largest attended funerals every held in the city. In accordance with the request of the family no sermon was delivered. Rev. Father Hoxmeier assisted by Fathers Tritz and Tiltgen, conducted mass.

In respect for his memory the business houses of the city were closed during the funeral.

The Democrat extends condolence and sympathy to the sorrowing family and friends.
