From the Alton Democrat of Jan 23, 1897 page 5.

Mrs. Chas. Smit, nee Miss Marie Den Hartog, loving wife of Chas. (Klaas) Smit, passed peacefully away at her home two miles west of Orange City, last Tuesday evening, after five months of long and patient suffering from that dread disease consumption. Mrs. Smit was 22 years of age at the time of her death, just entering the prime of life when she was forced to leave
her loved ones and answer the final summons. Mr. and Mrs. Smit were married four years ago and during that time their life had been very happy. Two children, a son and daughter were born to them, who together with the sorrowing husband survive her. The funeral was held Thursday afternoon from the First Reformed church in Orange City, Rev. Kolyn officiating, interment in
the cemetery west of that city.
(Found the marriage record in Sioux county register page 116. Klaas Smit of Alton 22 years, parents were Wolter Smit and Lammerchien Spykerman married Oct 19, 1892 at Orange City to Maria Den Hartog age 19 of Orange City, parents were Henry Den Hartog and Arendje Vande Abel. )
