Alton, IA - Mrs. Clara Bowers, 92, publisher of the Alton Democrat since the death of her husband George E. in 1919, died at her home Sunday after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at the home at 2 p.m., Thursday. Burial will be in the Nassau Township Cemetery.
Mrs. Bowers was born January 23, 1858, in Michigan. She was graduated from Albion college in Michigan and taught at Hastings, Mich., before her marriage to Mr. Bowers in 1888, at Lowell, Mich.
Mr. & Mrs. Bowers moved to Hillsboro, ND where they farmed before buying the Hillsboro Banner. In 1894, the couple moved to Alton where Mr. Bowers was a salesman for a milling firm. Later he bought the Sioux County Herald at Orange City, which he owned for many years. In 1915, he purchased the Alton Democrat. On his death in 1919 Mrs. Bowers took over as publisher.
A son and daughter, Mary L. and George E., have operated the newspaper for the last several years. One other son, Clement E. of Helena, Mont. also survives.
