Gerrit was born February 17, 1925 near Montpelier, North Dakota, son of Walter and Hendrika (Van Grootheest) Niemeyer. The family lived near Inwood and in 1940 by Doon.
Gerrit married Helene DeBruin on November 29, 1950 at Rock Valley. Gerrit served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War 1951-1952. He then farmed in the Doon area until his retirement to Doon in 1981. He was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church of Doon, Iowa. Besides farming, Gerrit enjoyed polishing and maintaining his vehicles and taking care of his yard. His family and church was most important to him.
Grateful for having shared his life is his wife, Helene, of 58 years; six children:
Glenda (Brian) Hellenga of Little Rock, IA, Judy (Carl) Jansma of Sioux Falls, SD, Harlan (Marilyn) Nieineyer of Doon, Ardell (Colleen) Niemeyer of Boyden, IA, Doiina (Wendell) Rensink of Elbow Lake, MN, Lisa (Roger) DeBey of Rock Rapids; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brother, Henry (Samantha) Niemeyer of George, IA; sisters: Grace (Bill) Keizer, Theo (Dick) Keizer all of Doon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Hendrika; brother and his wife, William and Hester Niemeyer.
