Mr. Stewart Goslinga, age 88, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2011, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, February 26, at 11:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Philip J. Kok will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Stewart was born on September 11, 1922, in rural Sheldon, the son of John and Sylvia (Vander Beek) Goslinga. He was raised in rural Sheldon, where he attended country school. As a teenager, he was an active member of 4-H, showing cattle at the fair. At the end of World War II, he served in the Iowa State Guard.
On February 27, 1946, he married Theresa Van Gelder in Orange City. They farmed between Sheldon and Hospers until 1994, when they retired to Orange City. He then volunteered at the Hope Haven Wheelchair Ministry, until his health failed him. In 2007 he became a resident of the Happy Siesta Retirement Home in Remsen, and in 2008, he transferred to the Heritage House.
Mr. Goslinga was currently a member of the First Christian Reformed Church. In earlier years, he belonged to the Hospers Christian Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was also a member of the boards of directors of the Hospers Christian School and Unity Christian High School in Orange City. In the community, he was a director of the Farmer’s Cooperative, the Rural Water System, the Cattleman’s Association, and the Hospers Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years; a son and his wife, Stan and Mary Goslinga, of Orange City; a daughter-in-law and her husband, Mary and Jerry Brink, of Princeton; five grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Joe Trosen, of St. Anthony, Minnesota; Michael Goslinga, of Kansas City, Missouri; Rachel and Ryan De Vries, of Iowa City; Eric and Kathleen Goslinga, of Marshalltown; and Gina and Paul Tiffany, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; two step-grandchildren and a spouse, Amy and Kevin Lamfers and Jerod Brink, all of Princeton; four great-grandchildren, Nathan, Christina, Josiah, and Grace Tiffany; two step-great-grandchildren, Andrew and Noah Lamfers; a brother and his wife, Erwin and Jo Goslinga, of Hospers; three sisters, Sylvia Henning, of Le Mars; Betty Roos, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Clara, and her husband, Wilbert Van Gelder, of Tuscon, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Jean Goslinga of Orange City; as well as Theresa’s siblings, Raymond (Marge) Van Gelder, of Littleton, Colorado; Dick (Helen) Van Gelder, of Sioux Falls; Margaret (Vern) Muilenburg, of Orange City; (Marsha) Van Gelder, of Edgerton, Minnesota; Arnie (Marge) Van Gelder, of Orange City; and Caroline (Rodney) Vander Brake, of Sheldon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Arlin Goslinga; brother, John Goslinga, Jr.; brothers-in-law, Harlan Roos, Roger Henning, and Edward Van Gelder; and infant sister, Elizabeth.
