Merrit Miller considered dead.
Relatives of Lieut. Merrit S. Miller of SanFernando CA, formerly of Hawarden, who was reported missing in action off the coast of Ponape in the South Pacific, has been pronounced dead by the war department. His case was reviewed and his death date has been set as of January 19, 1946.
Lieut. Miller, son of the late Merrit Miller, Sr., was born Mary 12, 1919, and grew to manhood in Hawarden. He graduated from Hawarden high school in 1937. In 1938 he went to Califonia with his parents, at the time he enlisted in the air corps in April 1942, he was assistant manager of Fitzsimmons store in North Hollywood CA. He was married to Beverly Hughes of DesMoines on April 8, 1942. A daughter, Diana was born Marc 6, 1943.
He served as a pilot on a B-25 leaving the United States September 20, 1943, to go to the Gilbert Islands in the south Pacific. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying cross and the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
His father preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife and daughter of San Fernando Ca; his mother Mrs. B. E. Elford of San Francisco CA; a brother, Dan Miller of San Fernando CA; a half siter Mrs. Jay McAninch of Long Beach CA and a half brother, Thorpe Janes of Clearwater CA.
