Death: February 4, 2011
Mr. Delbert Popma, age 98, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, February 4, 2011, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.
There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, February 9, at 10:30a.m., at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Philip Kok will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Delbert Thomas was born on November 30, 1912, at Maurice, the son of Abel and Effie (Swarts) Popma. He was raised on a farm near Sioux Center, where he attended a country school.
On December 20, 1939, he married Sebianne Reinders at Carnes. They farmed at Carnes for 45 years. In 1984, they retired into Orange City. Mrs. Popma passed away on April 3, 2003, in Orange City, after more than 63 years of marriage.
In 2009, "Dub" became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City.
He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church.
Mr. Popma was a farmer at heart. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and especially trapping, and he shared the produce from his garden with relatives and friends. He also faithfully visited the "old people".
Survivors include his four children and their spouses, Shardell and Marvin Swets, of Hull; Mary and Kenneth Wiersma, of Fruitport, Michigan; Dan and Marlys Popma, of Colfax; and James and Mary Popma, of Ankeny; thirteen grandchildren, Pamela Caldwell, Mark Swets, Jay Swets, Tanya Jones, Jane Willekes, Jenny Cox, Dustin Popma, Micah Popma, Whitney Johnson, Angel Popma, Christine Louis, Shawn Popma, and Molly Popma; twenty great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; a special friend, Betty Smit, of Orange City; and a sister and her husband, Muriel and John Palsrock, of Rock Rapids.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters and their spouses, Blanche Popma, Frank and Rencella Popma, Loyd and Esther Popma, Sadie and Lawrence Ver Steeg, and Madge and Everett De Boer.
