Mrs. Joanne Brinks, age 72, of Hull, passed away on Monday, February 27, at the Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley.

There will be a memorial service on Thursday, March 2, at 2:00pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Carl Klompien will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley. There will be a family prayer service on Thursday, at 12:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. Joanne Mae was born on January 9, 1934, in Rock Valley, the daughter of Nick and Hattie (De Boer) Cleveringa. She was raised at Rock Valley, where she attended the Christian School. She graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull and attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

On November 23, 1956, she married Henry John Brinks in Rock Valley. They made their home in Middleburg, where they operated the Middleburg Store. In 1971, they moved into Hull.

In earlier years, "Jo" was a teacher at the Rock Valley Christian School. Later, she was employed at Hope Haven and River Valley School in Rock Valley. She was currently a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull, but had also belonged to the Christian Reformed and Reformed churches in Middleburg. She was active in the programs of all these churches, especially the women's organizations and Bible studies. She also taught Sunday school classes and sponsored the girl's club and young people's groups.

Joanne was a devoted child of God, and she enjoyed attending the Coffee Break Bible Study, reading, and spending time with her family and friends. Also, she was known as an excellent cook.

Survivors include her husband of more than 49 years; a daughter and her husband, Kim and Ed Starkenburg, of Orange City; a son, Lionel "Butch" Brinks, of Sioux Center; a grandson, Austin Brinks; a step-grandson and his wife, Aron and Jamie Moir; a step-great-granddaughter, Katelyn Moir; a brother and his wife, Roger and Esther Cleveringa, and a sister, Marilyn Vander Schaaf, all of Rock Valley; two sisters-in-law, Harriet Vander Stoep, of Orange City; and Carol, and her husband, John Ritzema, of Cedar Springs, Michigan; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers-in-laws, Clarence Vander Stoep and Marvin Brinks.
