Hawarden, Iowa- Myrtle Mae Wood, 95, of Hawarden, died Thursday, December 30, 2010 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with the family present beginning at 5:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Myrtle Mae Wood was born August 31, 1915 on a farm near Hudson, South Dakota, the daughter of Mike and Hazel Mae (Wood) Dykstra. They moved to Hawarden, Iowa in 1929 where she graduated from the Hawarden High School in 1934. Myrtle married Jerry Wood August 25, 1940. While Jerry served in the Army they made their home in Monroe, North Carolina and Sparta, Wisconsin. Myrtle worked in the finger print department of the FBI when Jerry was serving overseas. They returned to Hawarden in December of 1945.
Myrtle was a member of the MIC, American Legion Auxiliary, UMW, and the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening and sewing and the couple enjoyed square and round dancing. Jerry died October 27, 2009.
Survivors include her daughter, Charlyne and husband Wolfgang Graf of Geislingen-Steige, Germany; sister, Lenore "Brownie" and husband Harold Busch of Hawarden; sisters-in-law, Donnie Wood of Hawarden, Doris Wood of Naperville, Illinois; and Gwen Gant of Manteca, California; and three grandchildren, Jennifer, Fabian, and Emily.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry; brother, George Dykstra; and sister, Dorothy Loeb.
