Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the First Reformed Church in Volga [S.D.] for Jessie VanderWal, 69, of Volga. Mrs. VanderWal died at the Brookings Hospital April 8 following a lengthy illness.

The Reverend Kenneth Hartgerink officiated. Music was provided by Marlys VanderWal, organist, and by the C Sharps singing "Because He Lives." Honorary pallbearers were Ralph Breeschoten, Fred Carter, Arnold Van Maanen, William J. VanderWal and Nick VandeWeerd. Active pallbearers were Martin Bruinsma, Robert Bruinsma, Stanley Bruinsma, Steven Kalsbeck, Steven VanderWal and Gary Weisner. Burial was in Trinity Cemetery near Volga. Eidsness Funeral Home of Volga was in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Katherine VanderWal was born Jan. 21, 1915 near Sioux Center, Iowa, the daughter of Dick and Ida (Franken) Bruinsma. In 1929 she moved with her family to a farm near Estelline. On June 28, 1940, she married Arie A. VanderWal at Estelline. The couple spent their entire married life in the Volga community. Mrs. VanderWal was a member of the First Reformed Church and the First Reformed Church Women of Volga.

Survivors include the widower; three daughters: Mrs. Gary (Janice) Rames, Mrs. Duane (Judi) Groeneveld and Linda VanderWal, all of Sioux Falls; one son, Wayne WanderWal of Brookings; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her father, Dick Bruinsma of Estelline; four sisters: Mrs. Janet Bleeker of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mrs. Arnold (Stephena) Kalsbeck of Estelline, Mrs. Wallace (Eleanor) Weisner of Sioux Falls and Mrs. Robert (Iva) Jensen of Hendricks, Minn.; and five brothers: Ben Bruinsma of Clear Lake, Alvin Bruinsma of Estelline, Robert and Lester Bruinsma, both of Castlewood, and Delmar Bruinsma of Brookings. She was preceded in death by her mother and one brother.

Mrs. Lane Bruinsma, Mrs. Ed G. Mouw, Mrs. Bert Bruinsma and Mrs. Gerrit Van Putten went to Volga, S.D., Wednesday to attend the funeral services held there for a niece, Mrs. Jessie Van Der Wal, who passed away at the age of 69 following a years illness with cancer. She was the former Jessie Bruinsma, daughter of Dick Bruinsma of Estelline, S.D.
