Mrs. Gertrude Huisman, age 90, of Hospers, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.

There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, November 9, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Milton Sikkema will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery in rural Hospers. Visitation will be after 5:30pm on Monday, with the family present from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Gertrude was born on February 17, 1920, in rural Hospers, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Muyskens) Verdoorn. She was raised in the Newkirk area.

On February 3, 1940, she married Matthew Huisman at the family home near Newkirk. The couple lived in Newkirk and later in Oregon. In 1954, they moved to the Sioux Center area, and in 1964, they moved to Hospers. "Matt" passed away on October 9, 1998, in Orange City, after more than 58 years of marriage.

In September of 2008, "Gert" became a resident of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hospers. Although primarily a homemaker, she also assisted her husband in his businesses, including H. & S. Manufacturing in Hospers.

She enjoyed playing cards, knitting, and fixing puzzles. She was a very social person, who liked visiting, especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her seven children and their spouses, Anna Mae and Eugene Schutt, of Hospers; Carol Faye and Robert Mulligan, of Portland, Oregon; Betty Lou and Mark Mennis, of Mesa, Arizona; Henry Lee and Vicki Huisman, of Meadowlakes, Texas; Judy Ann and Jay Schipper, of Hospers; Linda Rae and Dennis Hofmeyer, of Hospers; and Vicky Lynn and Mark Oldenkamp, of Allen, Nebraska; sixteen grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Diana Sharer, and a brother, Henry Verdoorn, Jr., both of Gladstone, Oregon.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Melissa Oldenkamp; and two brothers, Donald N. Verdoorn, and another Henry Verdoorn, at age 7.
