Mr. Anthony De Groot, age 82, of Hull, passed away on Monday, September 22, 2008, at his residence.
There will be a funeral service on Thursday, September 25, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Verlyn Boone will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 3:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
Anthony George was born on March 5, 1926, at Hull, the son of George and Gertrude (Brunsting) De Groot. He was raised at Hull, where he attended the Christian School.
On March 8, 1950, he married Lavonne Firn Jantzen at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Hull. They made their home in Hull, where for several years he was an electrician in the Hull and Sioux Center areas. In 1953, they moved to the family farm northeast of Hull. During this time, besides farming, he was also a managing partner in the JESCO Electric Supply Company in Sioux Center for ten years. in 1991, they retired into Hull.
Mr. De Groot was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory as an elder, taught catechism classes, and belonged to the Men's Brotherhood. He was also an active member of the Gideons, and he led services at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, bowling, camping, and especially attending
his grandchildren's activities.
Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years; two children and their spouses, Beverly and Wallace Boogerd, of Orange City; and Brent and Starla De Groot, of Hull; six grandchildren and their spouses, Emily and Matthew Hekman, Kristin and Matthew Mellema, Matthew and Janey Boogerd, Ashley De Groot, Amy De Groot, and Alyssa De Groot; seven great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Dorothy and Rudy Schumacher, of Zeeland, Michigan; and a sister-in-law, Alberta Bolks, of Hull.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers,
John A. De Groot and Louis E. De Groot, and his wife, Evelyn; a brother-in-law,
Marten Boer; a nephew, Larry Boer; and his parents-in-law, Fred and Alvina
Jantzen.
