Mr. Cornelius De Groot, age 86, of Alton, passed away on Sunday, February 25, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.
There will be a funeral service on Thursday, March 1, at 10:00am, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Heilman will officiate.
Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.
Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Cornelius was born on August 22, 1920, near Doon, the son of Abraham and Jennie (Koel) De Groot. He was raised in rural Sioux Center, where he attended country school, and he received an honorable discharge from the United States Navy during World War II.
On January 26, 1949, he married Eleanor Jasper in Ireton. They made their home in Sioux County, where he enjoyed farming at Alton most of his life. He was also employed as a tractor mechanic.
"Cornie" was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where he had served on the consistory as a deacon.
He liked reading and working with mechanical things. He loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of more than 58 years: four children, Larry De Groot, of Zeeland, Michigan; Rodney De Groot, and his wife, Sondra, of Orange City; Denise, and her husband Terry Plagman, of Runnells, Iowa; and Arlin De Groot, and his wife, Lisa, of Boise, Idaho; ten grandchildren, Lori, and her husband, Gordon Steenwyk; Raehael, and her husband, Kevin Kouw; Michael De Groot; Mark De Groot; Kim, and her husband, Brad Hettinga; Paula, and her husband, Ashley Mayland; Grant De Groot, and his fiance, Heidi Van Dam; Greg De Groot; Katie De Groot; and Erin De Groot; six great-grandchildren; a brother, John De Groot, of Orange City; and five sisters, Anna Kroon, of Orange City; Dirkje "Marie" De Weerd, of George; Lena Fedders, of Sioux Center; Gertrude Vis, of Rock Valley; and Edna Vande Broek, of Maurice.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Abraham, Jr., De Groot; and a sister, Jacoba De Weerd.
