WAS PIONEER OF UNION COUNTY
ALEX CARD DIED WEDNESDAY AT HOME OF DAUGHTER
Was 73 Years Old and Lived in This Community More Than 20 Years.--Funeral to be Held Friday

Alex. Card, a pioneer of Union county and for more than twenty years a resident of the Hawarden community, passed away about noon Wednesday [May 11] at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James M. Miller, four miles northwest of Hawarden in Virginia township. He had been a suffered [i.e., sufferer] from cancer for about a year and four or five months ago moved from Hawarden to the home of his daughter in order that he might receive more constant care. Although he failed steadily for the past few months he did not become bedfast until a week or two ago.

Funeral services will be held at the Miller home at 2:30 Friday afternoon with Rev. Robt. H. Forrester, pastor of the Methodist church of this city, in charge.

Alexander Card was born in Toronto, Canada, Aug. 17, 1858, and died May 11, 1932, at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 24 days. With his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Card, he came to Union county when he was 6 years old and the family located at Elk Point where he grew to manhood among the early settlers of that locality. On March 29, 1888, he was united in marriage with Miss Alice Wilcox at Akron. Five children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. The children, who with the widow are left to mourn his death, are Mrs. James M. Miller of Virginia township and Earl Card of Alcester. His father, W. B. Card, passed away only two or three years ago at the advanced age of 89 years.

Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Card farmed in the vicinity of Akron for more than twenty years. About 1910 they moved onto a farm in Union county, northwest of Hawarden, where they resided until 1920 when they retired from the farm and located in Hawarden where they have continued to reside until a few months ago.

Mr. Card was a man of quiet, kindly disposition, a good neighbor and friend and there are many outside the family circle who will mourn his passing.
