Harwood E. Frazier, 48, funeral director here since 1949, was stricken with a heart attack and died Saturday afternoon while driving an ambulance on 13th Street.

Mr. Frazier was returning home from the hospital where he had taken a patient early that afternoon. Riding with him when he died were his father-in-law, Morris Kvols, and Sam Highsmith who succeeded in stopping the vehicle.

Mr. Frazier was born April 28, 1907 at Missouri Valley, IA, where he attended high school and graduated in 1927. On December 4, 1930 he married Hortense Kvols at Papillion, Neb.

He graduated from the College of Mortuary Science at Chicago in 1931. He then worked in Omaha later moving to Sioux City where he worked at the Ruthledge Funeral Home. Later he was employed at the Luken Funeral Home in LeMars after which he again returned to Sioux City where he remained with the O'Toole-Gunn Funeral Home for 10 years, before coming to Hawarden. He was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors association, past president of the Rotary Club, Dale Lodge AF and AM, the Chamber of Commerce, Lodge 261 of Odd Fellows and the Methodist Church, for which he acted in the capacity of Secretary of the Official Board and Quarterly conference.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died March 15, 1955, his father, Ed Frazier, who died at Missouri Valley in 1953 and a brother Wilber who died May 8, 1955, at Missouri Valley.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o'clock at the Methodist Church, Rev. S. A. Kruschwitz officiating. Miss Alma Rexwinkle was the organist. A quartet composed of Mrs. D. J. Dewis, Mrs. M. O. Larson, E. V. Slife, Jr., and R. N. Brown sang "Living for Jesus" and "Beyond the Sunset". Casket bearers were York Johnson, Sam Highsmith, Ole Van Gore, Clarence Larson, Dave Gearhart and John Koob. Interment was at Grace Hill Cemetery. Harley Lewison of Akron was among several funeral directors in charge of arrangements.

Business places of Hawarden were closed for one hour during funeral services Tuesday afternoon.

Survivors include two sons, Charles and Martin of Hawarden; his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Frazier of Hawarden and a brother, Stoy, of Sioux Falls.
