Grace Irene Melvin. 72, died Thursday, April 19, 1990, in her home, due to smoke inhalation.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden. The Rev. Edmund Adams officiated, with burial in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Porter-Dow Funeral Home of Hawarden were in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Melvin, the former Grace Emmert was born Oct. 8, 1917, at Hawarden. She graduated from the Hawarden high school in 1936 and attended the University of Chicago and the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. She married Charles H. Melvin of Hawarden. She taught rural school for several years, was employed by the telephone company and worked for several years for Mid-Sioux Opportunity, Inc., serving on the board of directors until the time of her death. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and St. Mary's Guild, as well as the American legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Margaret Melvin of West Concord, Minn.; two sisters, June LeGros of Lander, Wyo., and Margie Maddern of Winter, Wis.; three grandchildren, Greg and Mary Jans and Aaron Vang, and two great-grandchildren.
