Joseph E. Akin, 83, of Hawarden, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 1992, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services were Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden, with Rev. Edmond Adams officiating. Burial in Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden under direction of Porter-Dow Funeral Home, Hawarden.
Mr. Akin was born July 9, 1909, in Sioux County, Iowa, northeast of Hudson, S.D. He was the son of Harry M. and Kate (Neary) Akin. He moved with his family to Rock Valley, Iowa, in 1914, and attended St. Mary's school. He graduated from Trinity High School in Sioux City in 1926, and 1934 received his doctor's degree in veterinary medicine from Iowa State University in Ames. He began his practice that year. He started working for the National Laboratory Corporation in 1937.
He married Helen Sedgwick Dec. 31, 1938, at Montrose, S.D. His work took him to Sioux City, Kansas City, Mo., and Des Moines. He started a practice in 1947 in Akron, Iowa and later in Hawarden.
He later joined the Aphis Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and lived in Great Bend, Kan., and West Point, Neb., before retiring to Hawarden in 1989. He was a past member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the National Association of Federal Veterinarians, the Associations of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Mossouri and Oklahoma, and the Hawarden Rotary He was a member of the Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Alcoholics Anonymous and the Calix Society.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Jerry and Marti Akin of Cincinnati and Dan and Audrey Akin of St. Paul, iN Minn.; two daughters, Dr. Kathleen "Ginger" Akin of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Dennis (Susan) Robertson of Hawarden; a sister, Lucille Marcheschi of De Kalb, 111.; eight grandchildren,
Christie, Eric, Erika, Kate and "Carly Akin, Teresa Phillips, Wendy Solberg and Stacy Robertson, and six great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a brother and sister, Harry Akin and Margaret Schroeder.
