Mrs. Cornelia Poppen, age 89, of Orange City, IA, formerly of Pella, IA, passed away on Monday, August 23, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.
There will be a funeral service on Friday, August 27, at 4:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot, the Rev. David Ter Beest, and the Rev. David Poppen will officiate. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, at 1:30pm, at the Graceland Cemetery in Pella, with the Rev. Norman Kolenbrander officiating. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Cornelia Ann Ter Louw Poppen, born July 29, 1921, at Newkirk, IA, was the daughter of the Rev. John Ter Louw and Henrietta Vander Hart Ter Louw. Since her father was a minister, she lived in Newkirk, IA, Waupun, WI, Grand Rapids, MI, South Holland, IL, and Steen, MN. Her mother died in 1928. Her father then married Henrietta’s sister, Annette Vander Hart.
In 1943 she graduated from Central College in Pella. On June 23, 1944, she married the Rev. Henry B. Poppen in Steen, Minnesota. They had 4 children – Charlotte Ann, Paul John, Linda Jean, and Timothy Alan.
The Poppens served Reformed churches in Ackley, IA; Alto, WI; Mount Greenwood-Chicago, IL; Rock Valley, IA; Denver CO; Sibley, IA; Sheboygan Falls, WI; and Clara City, MN. In retirement, they served in Palm Springs, FL; Willmar, MN; Lawton, OK; and Orange City. In 1992, they moved to Pella, and lived at the Pella Manor for 12 years. In 2004, they moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City.
Cornelia was a homemaker and a teacher. She taught Elementary and Junior High in Holland, MI, High School in Rock Valley, and Business College in Denver. She was active in Reformed Church Women’s work on the local and national level. In 1977, she served as Director of the RCA National Women’s Triennial in Minneapolis, MN. She taught young people’s Sunday School classes, directed choirs, and served as an organist. She was president of a city women’s club, directed plays, wrote programs for women’s ministry, and authored many Christmas programs. She also gave programs on Israel, a country she and her husband visited several times. Her hobbies were sewing, reading, and traveling.
Cornelia leaves to cherish her memory her husband, the Rev. Henry Poppen, her four children and their spouses, eight grandsons, and one great-granddaughter. They include Charlotte Ann, her husband, Dr. Robert Foreman, of Edmond, OK, and sons, Matthew and Nathan; Dr. Paul John Poppen, of Washington, DC, and son, Joseph, and wife, Jenny;
Linda Jean, her husband, Richard Ziegler, of Greeley, CO, and sons, Jonathan, Benjamin, Josiah, and his wife, Jen, and daughter, Abigail; Timothy Alan, his wife, Debra, of Sioux City, IA, and sons, Zachary, and wife, Larissa, and Daniel.
Also surviving are two brothers, the Rev. John TerLouw, and his wife, Jane, of Tallahassee, FL; and Garret TerLouw, and his wife, Ray, of Temple, TX; a sister, Etta, and her husband, Dr. I. John Hesselink, of Holland, MI; a brother-in-law, Andrew Rozeboom, of LuVerne, MN, and a sister-in-law, Marion TerLouw of Brandon, WI.
Preceding her in death were her mother and father, her stepmother, her sister, Mildred Rozeboom, and her brother, Marion TerLouw.
