May 21, 1924 - August 30, 2010
Mr. Fred Vander Weerd, age 86, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, August 30, 2010, at the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, September 1, at 2:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot and the Rev. David Ter Beest will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Wednesday, at 1:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Fred was born on May 21, 1924, at Rock Valley, the son of Harmen and Jacoba (Kuhl) Vande Weerd. He was raised at Rock Valley and Perkins. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy.

On February 26, 1946, he married Henrietta Joan De Groot in Middleburg. They made their home in Orange City, where he was a brick layer and stone mason. He was employed by Kepp Construction in Orange City and De Stigter Construction in Sioux Center. In 1964, he became a partner in Fischer and Vander Weerd Masonry. Gerry Fischer was a friend he viewed as a true kindred spirit. Fred and Henrietta moved to Landsmeer Ridge in December of 2005.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he had served as a deacon. He was also a lifetime member of the Pressman-Kosters Amercian Legion Post in Orange City. Reading was his favorite pastime.

Survivors include his wife of more than 64 years; three children and their spouses, Ron and Trudy Vander Weerd, of Peosta, Iowa; Brenda and Bill Cohn, of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Daryl and Lorys Vander Weerd, of St. Louis, Missouri; five grandchildren, Brittani Vander Weerd, Matthew Tonjes, Megan Tonjes, Bryant Vander Weerd, and Eric Vander Weerd; a step-granddaughter, Christine Bellavia; a sister, Mary Alice Brantzog, of California; and two brothers, Lockie Vande Weerd, of California, and Tom Vande Weerd.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Jennie Timmer, Della Boscaljon, Esther Vande Stouwe, and Hazel Willemstein; and two brothers Ray Vande Weerd and Charlie Vande Weerd.
