John "Jack" Verschoor

John Peter "Jack" Verschoor, 80, Battle Creek formerly of Hospers, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Services were Saturday Feb. 6, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. David Hermann officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Jack Verschoor, son of Fred and Antoinette (Robinet) Verschoor, was born Oct. 30, 1929, in Sheldon. He grew up and received his education in Hospers, where he graduated from Hospers High School.
He then attended Sheldon Junior College and served in the U.S. Army National Guard. He was employed at his father’s car dealership in Sheldon and Hospers.
He married Mary Miller on April 19, 1951, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton. They owned and operated the local grocery store in Hospers until 1969 when they moved to Battle Creek. He worked as service manager at Bickley Motors for many years.
He then worked in the fabrication department at GOMACO. He loved to keep busy and did many odd jobs in his spare time. He mowed lawns, painted, and worked
at Ida Sheltered Industries until heart problems forced ~ him to retire.
He was a member of c Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove. In earlier years, he served on the Battle Creek School District Board of Education. He will be remembered as a fun-loving man who enjoyed bowling, fishing, puzzle books and dancing. He was an avid University of Iowa Hawkeye fan and loved his dog, Barfy.
Survivors include his wife Mary Verschoor of Battle Creek; nine children, Brad and Donna Verschoor or Sioux City, Karen Hoffman of Colorado Springs, CU, Tern and Larry Wallace of Battle Creek, Doreen Grunzweig of Des Moines, Jack and Dede Verschoor of Kingsley, Todd Verschoor and special friend, Becky Umbach of Anthon, Kelly and Joan Verschoor of Battle Creek, and Jason and Brittany Verschoor of Arthur; 25 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joe and Marion Verschoor of Sheldon, and Fred and Penny Verschoor of Sonoma, AZ; and four sisters, Agnes Smith of Sacramento. CA, Roseland Derm Feryanitz of Medford, OR, Annette and Don Hastert of Minnesota, and Charlotte and Bob Honkomp of Kingsley.
