June 9, 1925 - July 17, 2010
Mrs. Ethel Aberson, age 85, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Hospital.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, July 20, at 10:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Perry De Groot will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Ethel was born on June 9, 1925, in Bigelow, Minnesota, the daughter of Otto and Hattie (Douma) De Jong. She was raised at Perkins and Carnes. She attended a country school and the Orange City Christian School.

On January 29, 1946, she married Anthony J. Aberson in Orange City. They made their home at Alton until the 1950’s, when they moved to a farm near Pipestone, Minnesota. In 1964, they moved to Orange City. "Tony" passed away on December 10, 2000, in Orange City.

In February of this year, Mrs. Aberson became a resident of the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

She was a homemaker, and she also served as a cook for the Orange City Lions Club meetings and as a waitress at the American Legion Bowling Alley and Café in Orange City.

Ethel was a member of the First Reformed Church.

She enjoyed playing games, such as Seven Steps Around the House and Spoons and fixing puzzles. She made many baby blankets and needlecraft ornaments. She was known for baking pies, "good" bars, and angel food cakes. She liked to play the organ in her house.

Survivors include three children and their spouses, Jim and Mavis Aberson, of Orange City; Ken and Deb Aberson, of Alta; and Deb and Norm Kempema, of Rock Valley; a son-in-law, Don Huitink, of Wellsville, Kansas; eleven grandchildren, Nicole Jupe, Angela (Hoss) Fuentes, Michelle (Don) Vaas; Melissa Aberson, Aaron Aberson, Anitra Wolf, Ben (Jesse) Aberson, Nick (Keisha) Aberson, Jillian (Ryan) Blankespoor, Meghan Kempema (Matthew Vande Kamp), and Taylor Kempema; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Lou Aalberts.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Karla Huitink; a grandson-in-law, Darin Jupe; a sister, Esther Muilenburg; and two brothers, Gerald De Jong and Tom De Jong.
