Carlton Gerald was the son of Martin and Anna (Duven) Van Peursem. He graduated from the Maurice High School in 1928. After farming with his father for two years, he entered Morningside College in Sioux City, from which he graduated in 1934, majoring in mathematics. He then served as a teacher in Shelby, IA.
On June 27, 1935, he married Vida Aschenhrenner. He continued to teach in Iowa schools and they lived in various communities, including Glenwood, Primghar, Audubon, and Laurens. In 1952, they began farming near Woodstock, Minnesota. However, two years later, he returned to his first love, teaching, including ten years at Fulda, Minnesota. Mrs. Van Peursern passed away January 15, 1974.
In 1976, Carlton retired and moved to Maurice. In 1977, he moved to Orange City.
On April 2, 1984, he married Neva (Phipps) Buckwalter. They made their home in Orange City, where he enjoyed woodworking. They also did much traveling, including delivering motor homes.
Mr. Van Peursern was a member of the First Reformed Church and Floyd Masonic Lodge 537 in Orange City.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Gerald and Wilma Van Peursem of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; and Stanley and Linda Van Peursem of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Cheryl Ritter and Nancy Rankin, both of Cottage Grove; Janelle Erickson of St. Paul, Minnesota; Dustin Van Peursem Of Chicago, Illinois; and Heather Folks of Madison. Wisconsin; six great-grandchildren a great-great-grandson:
two stepsons. Dan Thompson of the Cedar Rapids area, and Gary Thompson of Detroit, Michigan: three step-grandchildren; and three sisters, Nelvye Sallie of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Marguerite Barber of Portland, Oregon: and Bernice Spark of Council Bluffs.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd.
