Obituary: Hawarden, Iowa- Shirley Ann Hulstein Schelling, 69, of Hawarden, died Saturday, March 27, 2010 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hawarden Community Church with Rev. Doug Baker officiating. Burial will follow the luncheon at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Monday, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. at the Hawarden Community Church. Shirley Ann Hulstein Schelling was born May 29, 1940 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of John and Shirley (De Vries) Moerman. She spent most of her childhood in Sioux Center, Iowa were she met and married Harold Hulstein on April 1, 1955. They lived in the Hawarden, Iowa area and raised 6 children. Harold died on January 10, 1985.
Shirley later married Cornie Schelling on February 14, 1986. They made their home at Hawarden.
She enjoyed going to figure 8 races and playing bingo. She loved music and playing hymns on the organ. Shirley also enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and watching butterflies.
She is survived by her husband, Cornie Schelling; children and their spouses, Rick and Marlice Hulstein of Vacaville, California, Terry and Marlene Hulstein of Hawarden, Debra and Gerrit Van Beek of Rock Valley, Iowa, Christy and Brad Johnson of Vermillion, South Dakota, Harold "Ponch" and Kathy Hulstein of Rock Valley, and Jeff and Shayla Hulstein of Hawarden; step children, Bonnie Jurrens and husband Dean of Hawarden and Theresa Schelling also of Hawarden; 22 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Hulstein; 2 brothers, James Moerman and Harold Lee Moerman; and step son, Duane Schelling.
