Obituary: Hawarden, Iowa- Adelaine Alvina Wiksen, 88, of Hawarden, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Big Springs Baptist Church, rural Alcester, SD with Rev. Daryl Runion officiating. Burial will follow in the Big Springs Baptist Cemetery, with military rites by the VFW and American Legion of Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Adelaine A. Wiksen was born January 22, 1922 in Wausa, Nebraska, the daughter of Andrew and Edna (Ludvigson) Johnson. She attended school at Wausa and became a registered nurse from Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She served as a nurse in the US Army for 18 months during WWII.
Adelaine moved to Hawarden, Iowa in 1947 and was the superintendent of nursing at the Hawarden Community Hospital for 1 year. She later worked for many years as a RN there. She married Bernard Wiksen on February 20, 1948 in Wausa. They farmed near Hawarden in South Dakota. Adelaine was paralyzed in an accident in 1977.
She was a member of the Big Springs Baptist Church where she was active in women’s ministries and served as church treasurer. She was secretary of the county farm bureau and a member of the Hawarden VFW. Adelaine was also a member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America and served as vice president of the north central chapter of the PVA.
She is survived by her husband, Bernard; two sons, Wayne and wife Beth of Louisville, Kentucky and Arden and wife Rhonda of rural Hawarden; sister, Bernice Severson and husband Orvin of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Michelle Charlton, Kenneth Wiksen, Wade Wiksen, John Wiksen, Cody Prisk and wife Tiffaney, and Katie Ghaner; 6 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
Adelaine was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Vernor Johnson and wife Marion; and sister, Beverly Kindschuh and husband Eugene.
