Lewis J. Haines Dies At Age 64

Funeral services for Lewis J. Haines,64, brother of Mrs. Russell Younie and the late Que Haines and a long time composing room employee of the Sioux City Journal, who died on the way to a hospital after suffering a stroke Friday evening, were held in the Associated church in Hawarden Monday afternoon. Rev. William Sebring officiated with burial in Grace Hill cemetery here. Two Oakes Post 245, American Legion conducted military graveside rites

Mr.Haines was examined by the Woodbury county coroner who pronounced him dead upon arrival at the hospital. He said Mr.Haines had been ill about three days. His wife and son William, found him semiconscious when they arrived home Friday evening.

Mr. Haines was born November 27,1898 at Hawarden and married Pearl Swift, a sister of Harry Swift and the late Irving Swift, here on June 1,1919. He attended Hawarden high school from which he graduated in 1916 and later served overseas in France during World War I, seeing considerable front line fighting as a gunner.

He was affiliated with Monahan post 64, American Legion; Lt.Laurens C. Shull post 580 Veterans of Foreighn Wars, and the Faternal Order of Eagles.

After the war he worked as a carpenter here for four years. In 1923 he began working at the Sioux City Tribune and was a linotype operator becoming a Journal employee in May 1942. The family moved to Sioux City 37 years ago.

Survivors include the widow, two sons William R. of Sioux City and Lewis John jr. of Houston, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Alice Younie of Hawarden and a granddaughter.
