Former Hawarden Resident Killed in Train Mishap

Funeral services for H. J. (Jack) Newman, 52, of Huron, South Dakota, former Hawarden resident who was fatally injured in an accident about 7 p.m. Friday dying at 10:30 that night, were held at the Welter Funeral home in Huron Monday afternoon. Burial was in Huron cemetery.

Mr. Newman was crushed while inspecting the airbrakes on a box car of a Chicago and North Western freight train at Tyler, Minn., which had been hit by a car, when another car hit the freight pinning him between the vehicle and train. Visibility was poor due to the heavy fog. Mr. Newman died several hours later, suffering severe chest and back injuries.

He was born July 23, 1913, at Greenville, Ky., and with his parents moved to Hawarden as a small child. He attended the Hawarden public schools and served over seas during World War II.

He had been with eh CCCs and later was employed in road construction at Hawarden until 1941.

At the close of they second work war he married Virginia Ingalls, formerly of Hawarden, who also had served in a women’s division of the armed forces, on March 12, 1946, at Huron. They resided at Huron their entire married life. He was employed by the Chicago and North Western railway since his discharge from the services.

He attended Bethesda Mennonite Brethren church and was a member of the Order of Railway Conductors and Brakemen and William Reaves American Legion Post No. 7.

Survivors include he widow, Virginia, a son, Butch , and a daughter, Kathy, both at home; his mother, Mrs. Bessie Miller of Greenville, Ky., and a number of Greenville, Ky., a nephew, Jim Newman of Cut Bank, Mont., a niece Mrs. Barbara Sorrow of Athens, GA., and a number of aunts and uncles many of who reside at Hawarden.

He preceded in death by his father and his only brother, Bill, who also was crushed to death when breaking a horse at Cut Bank, Mont., in June of 1959.
