IRETON, IOWA- Lois Katherine Rose, 96, of Ireton, died Monday, February 22, 2010 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Ireton with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Friday with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. The Porter Funeral Home in Ireton is assisting the family. Mrs. Rose, the former Lois Houlton, daughter of Bruce and Flossie (Thomas) Houlton, was born March 30, 1913 in Sioux County, Iowa, on a farm near Ireton, and has lived her entire life in the Ireton area.
She married George Rose February 22, 1941. They farmed after their marriage and moved into Ireton in 1967 due to George’s ill health. Her husband passed away on December 27, 1974. She taught country school prior to her marriage for ten years. Lois worked as Secretary at the Eisma Brothers Garage and also as an Aide at the Sioux Center Community Hospital for 10 years.
During her childhood, Lois was a Camp Fire Girl where she became interested in studying birds. Later in life she began making and collecting all types of birds made in ceramics. She was a very active life long member of the United Methodist Church in Ireton. Lois served as a Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher, treasurer of the church, sang in the church choir, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
Lois is survived by her brother, Charles Houlton and his wife Helen of Ireton; sister, Marjorie Johnson of Ireton; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Mae Poll Riter, Ila Vander Hamm, Helen Lemke, Neva Brown, and Fern Eilts; nephews, Robert Johnson and Charles Vander Hamm; niece, Janine Brown; and a great-niece, Kayla Eilts
