Norton Thomas Yackel was born July 3, 1917, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Philip Yackel and Catherine (Hanley) Yackel. He graduated from High School in 1935. Norton (Nortie) moved to King of Prussia, PA in 1955 and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad beginning in 1939.
He was united in marriage to Leanore (Lee) Shirley Schlein on September 5 1945, in Philadelphia, PA. Nortie and Lee lived in King of Prussia before moving to Santa Fe, NM in 2000 and then after Lee passed away in 2003 Nortie came to Hawarden. Together they had two children. He had a forty-year career at the Pennsylvania Railroad beginning in 1939.
He loved ice cream, his Bedlington terriers, and enjoyed puzzles, playing solitaire, everything about trains and listening to opera. He especially enjoyed the company of his special friends Ida Langstraat and Beulah Gant of Hawarden and Jack Rheingans of Asbury, IA.
At the time of death, he lived with his son in Hawarden and remained extremely active for his age.
Survivors include one son and his wife, Ron Yackel and Sue Yackel-Gant of Hawarden and the U.S. Virgin Islands, one daughter and her husband Renee and Paul Mushen of Santa Fe, New Mexico, one grandchild and his wife Ezra and Eleanor Hutterer and Haylee his great-grandchild, also from Santa Fe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, two sisters, Mae Byrne of Long Beach, CA and Claire Daveler of Philadelphia, PA; and two brothers, Leo and Phil of Philadelphia, PA.
