Hawarden, Iowa- Catherine J. Bowden, 83, of Hawarden, died Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Hawarden Community Hospital.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Hawarden with Pastor Dan Lozer officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Monday with the family present from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Catherine J. (Vande Hoef) Bowden was born April 9, 1926 on a farm northeast of Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of Ed and Agnes (Vander Mei) Vande Hoef. She married Thayne Bowden on January 26, 1943.
Catherine worked for the West Sioux Schools in the hot lunch program for many years and was a child care provider in her home. She was happiest after her retirement when she and her 25 year companion, Richard Hurt, moved to the farm in Nebraska. Together they enjoyed traveling, fishing on the home place, and visiting casinos. Catherine returned to Hawarden in 2002.
She was a longtime member of the Associated Church in Hawarden and was a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Survivors include her four children, Kay Schnoor of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Lonnie Bowden and wife Karen of West Liberty, Iowa, William Bowden and Trudy Paul of Hawarden, and Mark Bowden and wife Kathie Petrie of Sioux City; grandchildren, Justin Schnoor and Amanda, Matt Schnoor and fiance’ Amanda Hanson, Nathan Bowden, Kama Johnson, Ben Johnson, Jed Johnson, Paula Wilson and husband Brett, Emma Petrie-Smith, and Lizzie Petrie-Smith; two great-grandchildren, Kaia Schnoor and Kemper Bowden; her sisters, Joann Winterfeld of Ireton, Iowa, Agnes Kleinhesselink of Hixson, Tennessee, Edna Royston and husband Tom of Mitchell, South Dakota, and Charlene Lill and husband Dean of Hawarden; sisters-in-law, Mary Vande Hoef of Denver, Colorado and Hazel Vande Hoef of Nederland, Texas; and many nephews and nieces.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Adrian in infancy, Adrian, Harold, Tuenis "Tony", and Richard "Dickie"; also a great-grandson, A. J. Schnoor; 3 nephews; and 2 nieces.
Catherine was a tissue donor through the Iowa Donor Network following her death.
