Hawarden, Iowa- Millie Bartels, 84, of Hawarden, died Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Millie Bartels was born September 13, 1925 in Yankton, South Dakota, the daughter of Peter Lyle and Ruth (Rifenbark) Thompson. She was raised in Hawarden, Iowa and graduated from Hawarden High School in 1942.
Millie was the chief telephone operator with AT&T from 1942 until 1960. She married Allen Bartels on April 6, 1957 in Hawarden. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the Xi Delta Mu Sorority of Beta Sigma Phi. She volunteered for many years at the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store and she very much enjoyed shopping. Allen died on July 28, 1995.
Millie is survived by her daughter, Tina Peterson of Canton, South Dakota and her children, Danica, Amanda, Ian, and Kyle and granddaughter, Rian; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Hovey and her husband Steve of Austin, Minnesota and her children, Mackenzie, Maggie, and Marissa; her brother, Lyle Thompson of Hawarden; her sister, Lura Gayer and her husband Robert of Rock Valley, Iowa; and many nephews and nieces.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Bob; sister, Marge Molzen and her husband Glenn; and sister-in-law, Jan Thompson.
