Winnie Smit, daughter of Frank and Kate (Granstra) De Jong was born on March 11, 1906 in Carnes, IA. She lived her youth in Carnes and Hospers, IA where she attended a country school.
She was united in marriage to Joe J Smit of Hospers, IA on December 5, 1928 in Hospers. They lived in Prinsburg, MN where they farmed. In 1978 they retired and moved to Sheldon. Joe passed away on February 1, 1993. Winnie moved to the Prairie View Home of Sanborn in February of 2000.
Winnie enjoyed gardening, crocheting and entertaining her family.
She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon where she was a member of the Golden Hour Circle. She was also a member of the Sheldon Christian School Auxilliary.
She passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2003, at the Prairie View Home in Sanborn.
Those left to cherish her memories are four daughters and sons in laws: Kathleen and Andy Zylstra of Sheldon, IA, Fran and Ed Boer of Byron Center, MI, Betty and Pierson Elgersma of Sheldon, IA, three sons and daughter in laws: James and Jennie Smit of Sheldon, Jerry and Linda Smit of Lowell, MI, Roger and Phyllis Smit of Cave Creek, AZ; 16 grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren, one sister, Alice Kreykes of Sheldon IA, one sister in law, Harriet De Jong, of Grand Rapids, MI.
She was preceded in death by her husband,Joe, her parents; two brother, Roy De Jong and Bert De Jong; two sisters, Jennie De Jong and Florence Smit; one great grandson, Samuel Boer.
