Joe Smit, son of Jim and Wilhelmina (Pott) Smit was born on March 14, 1904 at Hospers, IA where he lived his youth and attended the Hospers Christian School.
He was united in marriage to Winnie De Jong of Hospers, IA. They lived in Prinsburg, MN where they farmed. They later moved to Hospers and Sheldon area where they farmed. Joe was also a seed corn dealer and in the gravel business for many years. In 1978 they retired and moved to Sheldon. Joe was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sheldon and a former board member of the Sheldon Christian School.
He passed away on Monday, February 1, 1993, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Winnie; four daughters, Mrs Andy (Kathleen) Zylstra of Sheldon, Mrs Ed (Fran)Boer of Cutlerville, MI, Mrs Pierson (Betty) Elgersma of Sanborn, IA; and Mrs Bob( Marilyn)Hoogeboom of Grandville, MI. Three sons, James Smit of Sheldon, Jerry Smit of Lowel, MI, Roger Smit of Cave Creek, AZ; 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; one brother, William Smit of Sheldon, 2 sisters, Winnie Poppema of Sheldon, and Jennie Waanders of Hospers, IA.
