William Smit, the son of Jim and Wilhelmina Pott Smit was born March 3, 1911 on the family farm near Hospers, IA. He recevied his education in country schools. On Feb. 2, 1937 he was united in marriage to Florence De Jong in Hospers, IA. After their marriage the couple were in the produce and feed business in Alton, IA. The couple were janitors at Western Christian High School and the Christian grade school in Orange City, IA. They moved to Sioux Center and were dorm parents at Dordt College and also served as volunteer workers at the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon. His wife, Florence, preceded him in death on July 30, 1987 in Sheldon. On October 14, 1989 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Swets in Sheldon. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Sheldon where she passed away on march 5, 1996. Bill had made his home at the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon and passed away on Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999 at the Northwest Iowa Health Center.
He is fondly remembered by his 3 daughters and their husbands: Wilman and Bill Nibbelink of Hull, IA;Karen and John Anema of Sanborn, IA;Darlene and Jan Van Ee of Merida, Mexico; one son and his wife Ron and Twla Smit of Sheldon,IA; also 20 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; 3 step daughters and 3 step sons, 13 step grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren; 2 sisters Jennie Waanders of Lakewood, CO and Winnie Poppema of Sheldon.
He was preceded in death by his wives, parents, 3 brothers, 1 half brother, and 3 half sister.
