ESTHER SCHOLTEN
Mrs. Esther Scholten, age 85, of rural Hospers, passed away on Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at her residence.
There will be a funeral service on Saturday, January 30, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Nicholas Davelaar will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hospers Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.
Esther was born on June 29, 1924, in Orange City, the daughter of Jacob and Katrina (Vander Stoep) Peters. She was raised at Hospers, where she attended a country school and graduated from the Hospers Christian School.
On October 18, 1945, she married Morris J. Scholten at her parents' home in Hospers. They first made their home in Newkirk and then Alton, but spent most of their lives in rural Hospers. There she was a homemaker and helped her husband farm, including bringing many dinners to the fields. She also gave piano lessons. Mr. Scholten passed away on April 24, 1998, in Sioux City.
Mrs. Scholten was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where she served as an organist for 61 years. Her sister taught her to play the organ, and she played at numerous funerals. She also belonged to the Golden Hour and Priscilla Societies there.
She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, and spending time with her family, especially babysitting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for sending cards to others and bringing many meals to the sick.
Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Katie and Harlan Rouse, of Hospers; three sons and their wives, Leland and Arlene Scholten, of Boyden; Arlan and Marcia Scholten, of Orange City; and Darwan and Janice Scholten, of Boyden; thirteen grandchildren, Karre (Jay) Sexton, Mark Rouse, Sara (Travis) Gemberling, Joel (Amanda) Scholten, Kimberly (Wade) Heemskerk, Mikah (Mary) Scholten, Aaron (Dana) Scholten, Keith Scholten, Miranda (Don) King, Larissa Scholten, Sheresa (Rob) O'Neill, Brayden Scholten, and Alyvia Scholten; twenty great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Herbert and Theresa Peters, of Sheldon; Morris' family, Ed and Eunice Scholten, of Sioux Center; Jim Scholten, of Inwood; Harriet and Al Van Zanten, of Doon; Bernard and Anna Scholten, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Helen Scholten, of Rock Valley.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Ava Allison Scholten; two sisters and their husbands, Marie and Cornelius Moerman and Caroline and Gilbert Visser; and Morris' family, Greta Scholten, Irma Scholten, Hilda Scholten, and Andrew Scholten.
