Austin Henry was the son of the Rev. Zwier and Jeanette (Van Kley) Roetrnan. His family moved from Holland, Nebraska. to Leighton, Iowa, where he attended elementary school.
They then moved to Newkirk, where he graduated from high school.
On March 24, 1937. he married Harriet Margaret Fikse at Newkirk. They first lived in rural Alton and then farmed southwest of Sheldon, where they continued to make their home.
Mr. Roetman was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church for 77 years. He and his wife enjoyed camping and traveling. He also liked building and working with wood.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years; seven children, Janice and her husband, John Kuiper, of Hospers: Rhea and her husband, Stan Sybesma of Spirit Lake: Roger Roetman of Sheldon: Donald Roetman and his wife, Diana. of Sheldon. Debra Roetman of Pacific Palasades, CA: Audrey and her husband, Leigh Gignilliat, of Glencoe, Illinois; and Karen and her husband. Mark Hill, of Seattle, Washington: nine grandchildren, Greg Kuiper and his wife Marg; Dan Kuiper and his wife, Kathy; Laura and her husband, Gary Malenke; Sara and her husband, Jeff Tolsma; David Sybesma and his wife, Beth; Ann and her husband, Kris Korver;
Olivia Gignilliat; Meg Hill; and Ella Hill; seventeen great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, Edwin and Anna Roetman of Sioux Center, IA.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alvin and Melvin Roetman; a half-brother, Gerald Mokma: and two half-sisters, Marguerite Rymes and Cornelia Mokma.
