From the Hawarden Independent of Aug 19, 1937
Eric, small son of Mr. and Mrs. Rollin Peterson, who resides on the H. J. Shoemaker farm southeast of Hawarden, met a tragic death by drowning in the stock tank about 7 o'clock last Thursday evening. The child, who was past two years of age, had wondered away form the house and had been gone about a half hour when a search was made for him. Mr. Peterson went to the tank and glanced about but failed to find him the first time and after searching about the buildings he returned to the tank and was horrified when he saw on of the lad's feet sticking up in the tank. A physician was summoned immediately and even though he realized that like was extinct he worked over the boy for some time but to no avail....
His remains were taken to Worthington MN Saturday and funeral services were held from the home of Mr. Peterson's brother in the afternoon. The little form was laid to rest in a cemetery there beside the graves of two other children of the family.
Eric Leonard Peterson, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Rollin Peterson was born May 3, 1935, and so was 2 years, 3 months and 9 daysold at the time of his death. Besides his parents he is survived by two sisters, Marie, aged 5 years, and Alice, aged 4 months. Sincere sympathy is extended to the family in thier hour of deepest sorrow.
