Miss Jeanine A. Berkenpas, 34, 3345 Dearborn Blvd, died Monday evening at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born December 29, 1943, at Sioux Center, Iowa, and was graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1962. She attended Northwestern College at Orange City, for 1 ½ years and received her bachelor of science degree in home economics from South Dakota State University at Brookings in 1966.

Miss Berkenpas taught at Wellsburg, Iowa, for two years and at Sioux City’s Central High School for three years, prior to receiving her masters degree in child development from the University of Nebraska in 1972.

Miss Berkenpas taught one year in Turkey for the U.S. Air Force School, spent a year in Kansas city, Missouri, before returning to Sioux City where she taught at East High School for a year and at West High School for two years, taking a leave of absence this year because of illness.

She was a member of Central Reformed Church at Sioux Center and did volunteer work for Planned Parenthood of Sioux City.

Survivors include her parents Mr. and Mrs. Richard Berkenpas, Sr., of Sioux City; four brothers, Richard Jr. of Rock Valley, Alden of Mapleton, Carl of Ashton and Merlin of Sioux City; and a sister, Mrs. Robert T.(Leone) Eidsmoe of Sioux City.

Services were held Wednesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Funeral Home, William Donkersloot, associate of Morningside Reformed Church officiated.

Other services were at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The Rev. Wesley Kiel officiated.

Burial was in Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Sioux Center. Pallbearers were Richard Jr., Alden, Carl, Merlin and Kevin Berkenpas and Robert R. Eidsmoe.

Miss Berkenpas donated her eyes to the Lion’s Iowa City Eye Bank. A memorial in her name has been established with the American Cancer Society.
