Elizabeth Den Herder, 81, of Sioux Center, IA died Monday, December 14, 2009 at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 10:30AM at First Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Rev. Roger Voskuil and Rev. Arnold Punt officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held Thursday at the First Reformed Church from 4-8PM with the family present from 5-7PM.

The Den Herder family prefers memorials be directed to the Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation.

Elizabeth Den Herder was born to Peter and Elsie (De Roo) De Jong on Christmas day 1927, at their Newkirk, Iowa farm. She attended Newkirk Consolidated High School and later graduated from the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing of Sioux City, Iowa. She began her nursing career at the Grossmann Hospital in Orange City.

On February 17, 1950, she married Kenneth Den Herder in Orange City. The couple made their home near Sioux Center where they farmed for forty years.

Elizabeth was one of the first nurses at the Sioux Center Community Hospital when it opened in 1951. She enjoyed nursing and established very close relationships with a group of her nursing friends. She will be remembered for the kind and compassionate care she gave to so many patients over the years.

She was a longtime member of the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. For many years she enjoyed being involved in quilting blankets that were given to missions.

Elizabeth loved to spend time with her family and enjoyed keeping up with their many activities. Her beloved Ken died August 24, 2001.

Elizabeth is survived by a daughter, Elaine Den Herder of Minneapolis, MN; three sons and daughters-in-law: Larry and Sharee Den Herder of Sioux Center, Lyle and Sharon Den Herder of Sioux Center; Gregg and Kim Den Herder of Winchester, VA; 8 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Nettie De Jong of Orange City, Jake and Ruth De Jong of Spirit Lake; Ronald and Ardith De Jong of Orange City; sister, Joan Enkhorn of La Palma, CA; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and John Rens of Larchwood and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and brother-in-law, Wes Enkhorn.
