Obituary: Hawarden, Iowa- Gerald Wood, 94, of Hawarden, Iowa died Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday, with the family present from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 4 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Gerald "Jerry" Wood was born April 19, 1915 in Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Ellis and LaVon (Richards) Wood. He graduated from Hawarden High School and went to work for Van Buskirk road construction company following graduation.
Jerry married Myrtle Dykstra on August 25, 1940. He enlisted in the US Army in April of 1941 and was stationed in camps in Monroe, NC and Sparta, WI. He went overseas in November of 1942 and served in North Africa and the invasion of Europe, serving in Ordinance Battalion. Following his discharge Jerry went into the Wood Insurance Agency, selling insurance, real estate, and preparing income tax.
Besides his hobby of golf, Jerry served many years as a Boy Scout leader and received the Silver Beaver Award. He was active in the American Legion and VFW along with Rotary where he was District Governor and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also an active member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed dancing and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; daughter Charlyne and husband Wolfgang Graf of Geislengen, Germany; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer, Fabian, and Emily; sister, Gwen Gant of San Francisco, California; sisters-in-law, Doris Wood of Naperville, Illinois and Donnie Wood of Hawarden.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George and Warren; and sister, Margaret Lichty.
