Mrs. Joan Hielkema, age 71, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2009, at the Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen.
There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, October 27, at 11:00am, at the American Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Keith Krebs and the Rev. Stephen Hielkema will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Tuesday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Visitation will be after 3:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.
Joan Carol was born on July 17, 1938, in Holland, Michigan, the daughter of Arthur Cornelius and Ruth (Dalman) Roos. As a pastor's daughter, she was raised in Holland, German Valley, Illinois, Castlewood, South Dakota, and Williamson, New York. After returning to Holland, she attended Hope College, where she earned her B. A. in Elementary Education.
On June 10, 1960, she married Arthur Gerald Hielkema in Holland, where she spent three years teaching first and second grade. In 1969, they moved to Orange City, where she continued her dedication to Early Childhood Education. In 1978, she began her employment with Mid-Sioux Opportunity, serving as Education Coordinator for nine years and as Head Start Director for seven years. She also helped establish the Orange City Day Care Center and was president of the Board of Directors for three years.
In September of 2006, Mrs. Hielkema became a resident of Happy Siesta.
She was a member of the American Reformed Church, where she sang in the choir for many years, was actively involved in numerous women's ministries, participated in Bible study, and taught Sunday School classes.
In addition, Joan was a volunteer and board member for the Hands Around the World store and assisted with Tulip Festival night shows and flower shows in Orange City. She enjoyed music, quilting, collecting dishes and owls, and decorating their home, as well as traveling with her family. Together, Joan and Art traveled internationally and donated their time participating in frequest mission trips.
Survivors include her husband of more than 49 years, Arthur; two sons, Stephen Hielkema, and his wife, Susan, of Columbus, Ohio; and Timothy Hielkema, of Des Moines; a daughter and her husband, Sarah and Brian Wiese, of West Des Moines; five grandchildren, Kathryn, Jennifer, and Thomas Heilkema, and Samuel and Benjamin Wiese; a brother and his wife, Robert and Marie Roos, of Grandville, Michigan; and a sister and her husband, Louise and Richard Hermenet, of Williamson, New York.
Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Day Care Center, the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice, or another cause of your choosing.
