Mr. Robert B. Vis, age 64, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at the Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen.
There will be a funeral service on Thursday, October 29, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Keith Krebs will officiate. Interment will follow at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the funeral home.
Robert Boone Vis was born on April 26, 1945, in Orange City, Iowa, the son of Robert Willis and Marcia Agatha (Boone) Vis. He was raised at Orange City, where he graduated from the Maurice-OrangeCity High School in 1963.
He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Anthropology from the University of Iowa and a Master of Arts Degree in Anthropology from the University of Missouri. He also attended the Front Range College and in 1996, received a Master of Science Degree in Food Science from the Colorado State University.
Robert served in the United States Army from 1969 through 1970, reaching the rank of Personnel Sergeant (E-5). From 1971 through 1974, he was an over-the-road cross-county truck driver for Kroblin Refrigerated Xpress in Waterloo, Iowa. During that time, he purchased a log cabin in the Rocky Mountains, seventeen miles up from Boulder, Colorado.
While living in the beautiful Colorado mountains, he was the owner and automotive mechanic at Peak-to-Peak Automotive, served as a refrigeration and HVAC technician at Nederland Refrigeration, was a computer operator at Emerling Engineering, and was the maintenance supervisor at the Eldora Ski Area.
Bob developed Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, but was able to remain in his house until 2006, when he could no longer care for himself.. He then stayed in an assisted living facility in Denver for four months, before moving to Happy Siesta, so he could be closer to family.
He had been married to Nancy Polatty for seventeen years, divorcing in 1997. His constant companion for the past twelve years has been his cat, Piet.
Mr. Vis was under the care of the American Reformed Church, and he was a member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post, both in Orange City.
Survivors include his sister and her husband, Dr. Bonnie M. and Dr. Lee K. Meier, of Orange City; a nephew, Dr. Clinton D. Korver (Miriam Rivera), of Atherton, California; a niece, Juliana Korver (Shawn Sinclair), of Bowling Green, Kentucky; two grand-nieces, Serena and Sophia Rivera-Korver; an aunt, Margaret Hubers (Dale), of Orange City; and three uncles, Darlo Boone, of The Villages, Florida; Jon Boone (Nila), of Rapid City, South Dakota; and Norman Bastemeyer (Carol), of West Des Moines, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1997, his mother in 2000, and an aunt, Kay Boone, in 2008.
