Mrs. John Alfs, a resident of this community for more than 25 years, passed away at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City at 8:30 last Friday evening. Mrs. Alfs was taken seriously ill six weeks preceding her death and was removed to the hospital in Sioux City in hopes that she might overcome her illness even though it was known that her condition was extremely serious.
Funeral services were held at the Associated church at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon with the pastor, Rev. T. H. Harding, in charge. Her funeral was carried out in the detailed way which she had herself planned. A quartette composed of Harold Shoemaker, A. C. Henning, Miss Dorothy Olson and Helen Dorothy Shoemaker, sang her favorite hymns. Interment was made beside her husband in Grace Hill Cemetery.
Cora Keith, daughter of George L. and Alice Ingham Keith, was born at Frankfort, Wis., Oct. 25, 1879, and passed away May 27, 1938, at the age of 58 years, 7 months and 2 days. She attended school at Frankfort, graduating from high school there, and later she attended the Teachers College at Winona, Minn., preparing herself for the teaching profession, which she followed. She was united in marriage with John Alfs at Marshall, Minn., June 11, 1912, after which she came to this community to make her home. She lived on a farm in Eagle Township until March, 1919, when she and her husband came to Hawarden to make their home, living here continuously since that time. Her husband passed away last December 17th and his death was a severe blow to her. Being in frail health she did not have the resistance to overcome the ravages of disease which spread rapidly throughout her system. During her stay at the hospital, even though she suffered greatly, she kept in touch with her friends by letter through her sister-in-law, Mrs. Roy Keith, who remained constantly at her side. She is survived by one brother, Roy Keith of Marshall, Minn., and two nephews, also of Marshall.
Mrs. Alfs was a member of the Associated church and held the office of superintendent of the Cradle Roll and she was also a member of the Ladies' Aid. She was of a quiet and unassuming personality but had those qualities which made and held friends. She was a lover of old friends and was never happier than when they held united gatherings in various homes.
