D.T.Gearhart, one of the pioneer settlers
of Northwestern Iowa, died at his home
in this city early Monday morning, from
the result of blood poisoning.

The deceased received an injury to his
foot several months ago and blood
poisoning set in. He was taken to
the hospital in Sioux City and seemed
to improve under the treatment received
there and was able to return home
and his family and friends had hopes
for his complete recovery. About
ten days ago he suffered a relapse
and continued to gradually decline
from that time until the end came.
Funeral services were held at the
Methodist church Tuesday afternoon
and were conducted by Rev.
Nissen, pastor of the church.
The business houses were closed
all during the funeral hour and
the. attendance at the services
w.as unusually large.

David T. Gearhart was born in
Carroll county,. Ohio, where he
taught school for some time. On
Nov. 18, 1862, he was united in
marriage with Annis L. Johnson.
Six children were born to this
union. They are Rev. Charles,
0-. New Castle, Colo., Mrs. Ella
E, Bancroft of Sioux City, Mrs.
Clara Barclay of Java, S. D.,
David T., of Chamberlain, S. D.,
John E., of Hawarden, and Mrs.
Mary Binghara of Marietta, Ohio.
His first wife died in Calliope,
Feb. 12, 1880. He was again
married in Duboise county, Ind.,
in 1884, to Queenie A. Sanders,
from which union one daughter,
Nannie A., was born. His children
were all present at his decease
and funeral.

Mr. Gearhart came to Cherokee
county, this state, in 1866 and
resided there six or seven years
alter which he moved onto a
farm near Hudson, S. D, ,He
resided there a few years and
then moved his family to Calliope.
During the Black Hills gold excitement
he made a trip with a
freighting outfit to the new El
Dorado, but did not remain there
long.^ After returning home he
soon after engaged in the real estate
and insurance business in
which he has since been continuously
engaged. He was elected
mayor of Calliope in the earlier
days of the town and has
held a number of other official
positions of responsibility. He
was city treasurer of Hawarden
until last spring when he retired
on account of his failing health.
The large attendance at his funeral
gave evidence of the respect
in which he was held by his old
friends and neighbors:
