SERVICES HELD FOR HARRY HEEMSTRA, 83

Funeral services were held in the Sandham Memorial Reformed church of Monroe, S. Dak., and at the Van Etten Funeral home in Orange City Friday, August 14, for Harry Heemstra, who died Monday, August 10 in Monroe after a lingering illness.

Interment was in the Orange City Cemetery.

He was born October 7, 1880 in The Netherlands and came to America with his parents when he was eight years of age. They migrated directly to Orange City, Iowa, in which area he was reared. As a boy and young man, he lived for several years with Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mouw, who greatly influenced his life.

He married Dora Haarsma in 1901. His wife survives after almost 63 years of married life.

For the first ten years of their married life, they lived on farms in the Orange City area. In 1911, they moved to Monroe, S. Dak., where they operated a dairy and stock farm adjoining Monroe until 1923. They then moved to Monroe and have resided in the same residence since that time.

He practiced the autioneering profession with great success in southeastern South Dakota until 1958.

He was an active member of the Sandham Memorial Reformed church and was a member of the school board. He served for many years on the Board of Directors and as an officer of the Turner County Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Company of Chancellor, S. Dak.

Survivors include the widow; two sons, Simon of Indianapolis, Ind., and Rev. Peter of Lafayette, Ind.; three daughters, Mrs. Dick (Dorothy) De Hoogh of Marion, S. Dak., Mrs. Maurice (Eldora) Klinger of Denver, Colo. and Mrs. Harvey (Harriet) Rowenhorst of Santa Ana, Calif.; three brothers, Will of Ardmore, Pa., Bert of Pine River, Minn., and Rev. Gerrit Heemstra of Pompton Lakes, N.J.; three sisters, Mrs. Jake Porter (Dora) of Inwood, Mrs. Gertrude Schaefer of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., and Mrs. John (Grace) Van Pelt of Alton, Iowa.

Preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers, Joe, John and Jake; two sisters, Dorothy and Cynthia and one grandson, Maurice Heemstra.

[Note--Harry was the son of Sibren "Sam" and Dirkje "Dorothy" (Westerbaan) Heemstra.]
