KILLED BY THE CARS

Mrs. Wm. Mieras, an old lady residing a mile east of Maurice, started for town last Thursday to market some butter and eggs. She walked down the highway until she arrived at the crossing of the railroads. As it was only a little over a block by following the track to town, and about three times that far around by the road, she started down the track walking on the end of the ties. A wild freight train, going west at a terrific rate of speed, ran into her, broke both legs and both arms causing instant death. Some claim the train whistled loudly and tried to put on the brakes and tried to stop, but it was under such headway that it was impossible.

Others claim the train was going more than 45 miles-per-hour and did not try to stop, until the engine had struck and killed the old lady, and only whistled for the crossing. Mrs. Mieras was about 70 years old of age and was a little deaf, and wore a cap and scarf wrapped around her ears. The accident occurred about two o'clock p.m. Tuesday, and that evening Coroner Quigley held an inquest but the verdict is not known at this time.
