Biography:
Merrill, James M. Born September 2, 1846, at Keene, New York; father, James Merrill, and Mother, Orinda McKenzie Merrill. Married Ophelia D. Lindsay May 2, 1882. Enlisted December 28, 1863, in Company C, One Hundred and Eighteenth New York Infantry; served also in the Ninety-sixth New York Infantry, to which regiment he was transferred June 13, 1865; served in the battles of Petersburg, Drury's Bluff, Fort Harrison, Fair Oaks, Carter, Cold Harbor, Yorktown, Williamsburg, Long Bridge, Jones Ford, Malvern Hill, Charles City, Cross Roads and campaign resulting in the fall of Richmond; discharged February 6, 1866, at City Point, Va. Settled in O'Brien County in 1871, residing near Sheldon. Died May 28, 1904, and was buried at Sheldon. Source: Old Soldiers of O'Brien County, Iowa

Poster's note: Although his Civil War record says that he settled in O'Brien County in 1871, Mr. Merrill lived in Grant Township, Sioux County in the 1885 and 1895 Iowa censuses and in the 1900 Federal Census.
