Celebrate Golden Wedding

Last Thursday, Jan. 13th, was the golden wedding anniversary of two pioneer residents of Ireton, Mr. and Mrs. R. A, Zimmerman, and in honor of the occasion their children planned and carried out a very successful surprise. About three o'clock in the afternoon a number of their friends arrived at their home in a body to extend their congratulations to this worthy couple and spend the afternoon with them. Social discourse in which many early day reminiscences were recounted served to make the hours slip by all too quickly. Then Rev, J. E. Rich Schmidt, pastor of the Lutheran church, gave a very appropriate talk which touched the hearts of all the company. At six o'clock a big wedding feast was served, the table centerpiece being a huge wedding cake with golden trimmings. Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman were showered with tokens of esteem from their admiring relatives and among the gifts was $65 in gold.

This venerable couple were married in Macoupin county, Illinois, Jan. 13, 1871. Immediately after their marriage they went to Nokomis, Montgomery county, Illinois, where they made their home until 1884, where Mr. Zimmerman followed his trade as a harness maker. In April, 1884, they came to Ireton and built the home which they still occupy. Mr. Zimmerman engaged in the general merchandise business in Ireton and operated a store here for about eight years when he sold out, later engaging in the hardware business, which line he followed for about four years. His business ventures proved successful and as he possessed great faith in the future possibilities of this section he invested his savings in farm land and thus acquired a competency which he and his wife have been able to enjoy in their declining years. He is the owner of eight well improved farms, five of which are located in Sioux county.

Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman are both enjoying excellent health. Mr. Zimmerman is 75 years of age while Mrs. Zimmerman is 78. Mr. and Mrs. Zimmerman were the parents of six children, fire of whom are living, all in Ireton or vicinity, and all of whom with their families were present at the golden wedding celebration. They also have fifteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The children are Mrs. August Niehaus, Mrs. Cort Struck, John Zimmerman, Mrs. Herman Hagge and Miss Hannah Zimmerman. In addition to the children and their families those who were present for the anniversary were: Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Frericks and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Plueger of Grant township, Plymouth county; Miss Hattie Gerdes of Hawarden; Peter Moeller and family, Richard Moeller and family, E. J. Johnson and family, Mr, and Mrs. John Moeller, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. H.
