Our ancient ancestors came from Norway to Scotland and were called ‘Innis”. Later, in Scotland our tribe who were protestants, changed the name to Younie. Glasgow has been entered on records as the Younies sailed from there. However, the families lived in Northern Scotland. In the late 1820’s several Younie families came to Canada, settling thirty-five miles south-west of Montreal at Durham, the name given to the first settlement at Ormstown.
John Younie was baptized March 15, 1749, in parish Kirk, Rothes, Scotland. I have no information as to whom he was married, but they had five sons, Lewis Younie being my great-grandfather. He was born Dec 17, 1813 in Glasgow, Scotland and died May 8, 1892, Sioux County, Iowa. He married Jane Maxwell Oct 17, 1847 in Montreal, Canada. She was born Feb 28, 1828, and died June 18, 1903, in Hawarden, Her birthplace was Edinburgh, Scotland.
Both Lewis and Jane came from Scotland to Canada in 1830. Jane was the eldest of 10 children and she returned to Scotland with her parents, but later cam again to Canada when she was 17. After their marriage, they farmed between Ormstown and Howick, southwest of Montreal, going to Delaware Co. Iowa, in 1861 and to Sioux Co. Iowa in 1885.
My grandfather, James Younie was one of 10 children and he was born Oct 26, 1861. Manchester, Iowa and died April 15, 1952 in Hawarden.
When a young boy he moved to Odebolt, where he lived a number of years. At 22 he came to Sioux County, and started farming. On Nov 28, 1888, he married Emma Metcalf of Hawarden. They were members of the Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. There were six children born to them. Florence the oldest died in infancy, Russell, Elmer, James Jr., Paul and Lois.
Granpa Younie was the first custodian of Oak Grove State Park and served in that capacity 14 years. Prior to this he had been custodian of the Associated Church.
Grandma Younie was the daughter of Isaac and Mary Russell Metcalf. He was born 1837, Yorkshire, England and married Mary Russel in 1862. She was born April 1839 in Watton, Yorkshire England and died Nov 3, 1900, Eagle Twp. Sioux County, Hiw father was John Metcalf and his mother was Harriett Moody Metcalf. The only information I have about Mary Russel’s parents is her father was Wm. Russel and was born in England.
Grandma Younie was a pioneer of Hawarden she was born Dec 22, 1871, in Watton, Yorkshire, England. When she was about a year old her parents and she came to America and settled near Rush Lake WI. Twelve years later they moved to Sioux Co. and settled on a farm, northeast of Hawarden. She had two brothers and one sister.
Russell Younie married Alice Haines and they had two daughters, Florence and Jeanette
Elmer married Cora A. Scott June 14, 1917. You will find their three children in the Younkin Family History in another section. Elmer was born March 6,1886. Elmer served in World War 1, being stationed in England, He is one of five surviving members of the Last Man’s Club. Most of his life was spent farming and he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers and later with his two sons. Cora was a Sunday School teacher at the Associated Church for 30 years, retiring in Nov 1952. She was Supt. Of Primary Department for many years.
