Charles B. Hoeven former congressman, dies .
Charles Hoeven died Sunday at age 85. Hoeven had been in elective public service for 38 years. The
Alton man was residing at the Heritage House in Orange City at the time of his death.

The Hon. Charles B. Hoeven, age 85, of Alton, former United States Congressman, passed away Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, where he had resided the past two years. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 1:30 p.m., at the Alton Reformed Church. The Rev. David Johnson and the Rev. Clarence Oreving will officiate, Interment will follow at Nassau Township Cemetery with military rites conducted by Floyd Post 200 of the American Legion. Visitation is Tuesday from 2-9 p.m. at the Van Etten-Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Floyd Lodge 537, AF & AM will conduct a Masonic service Tuesday evening.

Charles B. Hoeven was born at Hospers on March 36,1895, the son of Gerrit Hoeven and Lena Weiland
Hoeven. He moved with his parents to Alton in 1901. He graduated from the Alton Public High School in 1913 and from the State University of Iowa with a B.A. degree in 1920 and a LL.B. degree in 1922.

A lawyer by profession, he was admitted to the Iowa State Bar Association in 1922 and admitted to
practice before the United States Supreme Court in 1946; county attorney of Sioux County, Iowa,'
1925:1937; member of the Iowa State Senate, 1937-1941; President Pro-Tempore of the Iowa State
Senate, 1939-1941; permanent chairman of the Iowa Republican State Convention, 1940; both temporary and permanent chairman of the Iowa Republican Judicial Convention; 1942 former president of the Iowa County Attorneys Association; former president, Sioux County Bar' Association, former president, 36 Judicial Bar Association (former 21st), and Iowa delegate to the Republican National Convention in San Francisco, Calif., 1964.

He served as former president, board of education, Alton; member, board of directors and first vice-president of the Alton Savings Bank, Alton; past president, Alton Rotary Club; past president, Orange City; Lions Club, member; Sioux Golf and Country Club; member, Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity at the State University of Iowa; member, United Presbyterian Church at Alton and a former member of its session; former member of the Council of the Presbytery of Northwest Iowa and past moderator of the Presbytery of Northwest Iowa, 1967; member for 61 years with Floyd Lodge of. Masonic Bodies; veteran of World War I serving with the A.E.F. in England and France; charter member of Floyd Post No. 200, American Legion, Alton, and past commander of Floyd Post and a life member of Floyd Post; and member, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veteran's, and Veterans of World War I.

He was awarded certificate of accomplishment, State University of Iowa, 1947; honorary degree
LL.D., Westmar College, 1956; honorary degree LL.D., Morningside College, 1965; Distinguished Service Citation, Northwestern. College, 1964; honorary degree LL.D., Buena Vista College, 1968; Honor lowans Award, Buena Vista College, 1966. He served as United States delegate to Interparlimentary Union, London, 1957, 1961; Belgrade, 1963; Copenhagen, 1964. He was the congressional delegate to the Rural Food Organization, Rome, 1957; and Iowa delegate to National American Legion Conventions at Miami, New York, Cleveland, Chicago, and St. Louis. He served as Chairman, House of Representatives Republican Conference, 1962; Deputy Minority Whip, U.S. House of Representatives, 1957-1962; Ranking Republican Member, House Committee on Agriculture, 1958-1965.

Mr. Hoeven was elected to the 78th, 79th, 80th, 81st, 82nd, 83fd, 84th, 85th, 86th, and 88th Congresses of the United States as a member from the 6th Congressional District of Iowa (formerly 6th district). He voluntarily retired from Congress January 1, 1965, after being elected by the voters of northwest Iowa for twenty-two years, from 1943-1965. On .June 19, 1928,

Charles married Velma Ruth Mike (sic Pike), at Toledo, Iowa. Their children are Mrs. Stanley J. (Pauline Ruth) Marshall, of Ackley; and Charles Pike Hoeven, of Slater. He is also survived by five grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. C.S. Burrow, of Orange, Calif; and Mrs. E.F. Gilbert of Rock Rapids. Mr. Hoeven was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Allie Patty and a brother, Endor. Memorials may be directed to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children.

NOTE: His wife's maiden name was Pike, not Mike.
